Choosing your wedding photographer is a key part of your Big Day. After all, you want to be able to re-visit your day and see it from all angles- especially since you can’t be everywhere at once. But how do you choose the perfect wedding photographer for your wedding? What should you look for and what can you expect?  These are all important questions you will need to consider and have the answers to before reserving a photographer for your wedding.

What to Ask a Potential Wedding Photographer?

You have narrowed down the hunt for the perfect wedding photographer to 2-3, but now it’s decision time.

These questions can make it easier to decide.

Do they have your date available?

If they don’t then move on to the next one on the list.

How much experience do you have as a wedding photographer?

A more experienced photographer can be great but may have less flexibility and higher costs. Sometimes opting for someone with a little less experience (but producing beautiful work) means they will be more available.

Can I see examples of your work? How recent is it?

A good wedding photographer should have a portfolio you can view. Not just on their website, but an album where you can see actual prints.

What pics are included in your packages?

This will vary greatly, but should at minimum include family pics, wedding party pics, first look (if applicable), first dances, and ceremony pictures. Some wedding photographers will also offer engagement sessions, a bridal session, or even a boudoir session.

Do you need any specific information prior to the wedding day?

Typically, a photographer will want the order of the ceremony, any logistics, and a list of pics you want- especially if you want something not typically done.

Do we need to include you in the caterer’s count?

It is polite to plan for the photographer and their assistant to be included in the food count. You can’t assume they aren’t going to eat all day, just because they are shooting pics! Sure, there may be photographers who will not need to be included, but it is best to ask ahead of time.

Is travel time included in the price of the wedding package?

If you are asking the photographer to travel outside of your local area, you may be expected to pay for their time/accommodations.

How long will you be at the wedding?

It’s asking a lot to assume they will be there the entire day. Be sure you have a definite plan and know when they will be showing up. You don’t want to waste theirs or your time. Also, find out If there is an extra charge if your photographer must stay later than agreed upon.

When will we receive our photos?

Since most photography is shot digitally, you can anticipate there being well over 600 pics taken of your day. As such, photographers need time to go through them all and remove any blurry or unflattering images.  Talk to your photographer about their anticipated turnaround time.

What other services do you offer?

These might include specific editing requests, printed albums or pics, special shots, or any number of features. Know what you are paying for and what you will get.

Do we have full rights to the photos taken?

Once you have paid your wedding photographer in full as per your agreed-upon contract, you typically have full rights to any images taken. However, there may be special circumstances, so be sure to ask before signing a contract.

These are but a few questions you will want to ask, but there are many others. If you need a recommendation for a photographer, be sure to ask your Gala Events Facility coordinator. They have worked on many events and will be able to make suggestions.
