The question has been asked, the answer given, and the date chosen- but now it is time to start making plans. One of the first of these plans is the selection of the wedding invitation After all, you want people to Save the Date early so they can be a part of your special day. But, like choosing the wedding dress and venue, selecting the perfect wedding invitation can be a challenge.

How to Choose a Wedding Invitation

Check out any invitation website or visit a stationery store and you quickly discover that there are hundreds of styles, sizes, colors, textures, patterns, and more that can make up a wedding invitation. So, finding the perfect invite can seem like a daunting task. But, it doesn’t have to be stressful. If you are shopping for The Invitation that sets the tone for your wedding day, then here are a few tips to make the selection process a bit easier.

Determine what information you want the wedding invitation to include. Most invitations include the following:

  • Who is hosting
  • The request to attend
  • The couple’s names
  • Date and time
  • Location
  • Reception information
  • Dress code

You can include other information about the event as well, just remember that the more info stated, the larger your invitation may need to be. If you are concerned about having extra information, consider having an additional card printed to be sent with the invitation.

Do You Want a Picture on the Invitation?

In years past, a wedding invitation was merely a 5”x7” card that included the necessary information. However, today’s couples often choose to add one or more pictures. This is a great way to share an engagement pic or favorite couple picture with the invitees – especially those who do not see the couple regularly.

 Size Matters

No longer are 5”x7” wedding invitation the only choice – though it is a classic format that has plenty of space for all the pertinent details. Today’s couples are also using invitations that are 4.5” x 5.5”. Or, they are choosing to use the traditional for the main information and then having either a perforated section that is mailed back as the R.S.V.P.  and just including a small envelope for this part of the communication. Something else to consider is that if you are going for a very modern feel for your wedding, then choosing a smaller invitation is quite popular.

Say It with Style

If you are going for a timeless, sophisticated look the colors such as black, white and perhaps gold or silver are perfect choices whereas if you want a twist on the classic, then using a navy blue is a great choice – especially if a beach wedding or theme is the plan! If the goal is to create a warm and relaxed feel then colors such as copper, hunter green, and plum along with charcoal and black are the way to go.

Straight or Scalloped- the Wedding Invitation’s Edges

Depending on the formality or style of the wedding, you may want to have some fun with the edges of the invitation. Typically, weddings that are more formal in style will have rounded corners. For a playful tone, consider an invitation in a bracket shape or perhaps in the shape of a ticket.

Choosing a wedding invitation can be a lot of fun for you and your significant other. So, don’t stress. Take a deep breath, and get ready to enjoy the fun of planning not just a wedding but a new life together.
